"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."

What's Wrong With Christian Rock?

Most people who open this page are going to close it immediately, but if you'll keep reading, we have documted quotations and evidence directly from "Christian" rock bands who have openly said they are not Christians. However, before we get to those, we need to go over the foundations of this issue first:

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
-Ephesians 5:19

In modern-day America, I have found this verse to be a convenient excuse for Christians to listen to whatever they want, so long as they are "praising God," but typically the music they are listening to is not actually praising God (as we will see later). I almost never hear the rest of the verse preached.

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise... Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
-Ephesians 5:15-17

So often, I have listened to Christians say, "I felt the Holy Spirit was telling me this," much more than I hear a Christian say, "Here is what God's Word says about this." How do we know the will of the Lord? We know His will by His Word.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
-Romans 7:7

For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
-1 Thessalonians 4:3

The will of God is not founded on what we FEEL to be God's will, it is based on what His Word has told us about what He desires from us. Many people walk around calling themselves Christians and believe that they can do whatever they please and God still loves them. Though we are not saved by our works, our works are a direct evidential result of our Salvation, and music we listen to can not only alter our minds for better or worse, but it can also set an example to the world of what is acceptable to the Lord.

Sadly, many Christian churches today are teaching the next generation (by their own example) to equate the Holy Spirit with 'how they feel', and since music can alter how one feels, when someone gets a 'good feeling' from the music they are hearing, then they, in error, automatically equate that to the Holy Spirit moving through them. It is VERY dangerous to label the whimsical feelings of our heart as 'the Holy Spirit'.

We will get into more specific examples later about "Christian rock," but first we need to determine what "rock" music is, and where it came from, so we understand which tree is growing this fruit. "Rock" is short for "rock and roll," which is a term that was developed originally to refer to sex.
"'Rockin and rollin' was originally a euphemism for the sexual act... The expression had been in use on recordings for almost thirty years by the time disc jockey Alan Freed attached 'rock and roll' to a musical style."
-Michael Campbell, Rock and Roll: An Introduction, Cengage Learning, 2008, p. 101, ISBN: 9780534642952

"When Alan Freed moved to WINS in 1954, he was forced to change the name of his show from The Moondog House Rock and Roll Party to the Rock and Roll Show... Although Alan Freed did not coin the term Rock and Roll (it was a black euphemism for sexual intercourse that had been around for at least thirty years), he undoubtedly helped connect the label to the music for an ever-widening audience."
-Tom Larson, History of Rock and Roll, Kendall Hunt, 2004, p. 26, ISBN: 9780787299699

As our American society became more corrupt in the 20th century, teenagers would more frequently get together to have sex outside of marriage, and since there was often no place of privacy for them to have sex their parents' homes, they would fornicate in their cars. Having sex would rock the car back and forth, and when they were done, they would drive (roll) away, which is where phrase 'rocking and rolling' was first developed. This term 'rock and roll' (sex) was used to label a specific genre style of music, which Christians today are carrying on by labeling their music "Christian rock."

False Accusation of Logical Fallacy

There are lovers of rock music who attempt to claim an etymological fallacy on this section, but they do so in error because the term "rock and roll" still means "sex on the go," but it has been more recently used to label a certain style of music.
When you ask someone what "rock and roll" means, they most often reply: "rock music." This does not answer the question. All they did was define a specific type of music, but they did NOT define the actual term "rock and roll."
Even Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines the noun version of 'rock and roll' as "rock music," and one cannot define a word by using the word to define itself. As I searched through dictionaries, adjective and verb uses of the term "rock and roll" are defined by using "rock and roll" in the definition, and though it might be labeling a specific style of music, it is not defining the term, where it comes from, and why it is used today.

A proper explanation for an etymological fallacy is structured like this:
A is defined as B.
A used to be defined as C.
Therefore, A means C.
In order for me to have violated logical laws, the definition of "rock and roll" would have had to change at some point over the past 60 years, or in other words, the term "rock and roll" has not been redefined. (i.e. "used to be defined as") Again, this particular style of music is labeled "rock," which is short for "rock and roll," which means "sex-on-the-go," and the definition of it has never changed.

The "rock" music genre has evolved into many other forms, such as punk rock, alternative rock, heavy metal, goth rock, grunge, etc. I used to be one of those people that rolled my eyes at the old folks that would call rock music the devil's music, and the young folks say, "You don't understand." I discovered that both generations were correct. The older folks did NOT understand the truth behind the rock music, and the younger folks ARE listening to the Devil's music, so let's get both sides a proper education on the origins.

First, let's look at a man by the name of Aleister Crowley, who is considered by many to have been the most wicked man to ever walk the face of the earth in the past 200 years. This man did so many demonic, wicked things that I find difficulty in selecting only one or two quotations to give readers a full understanding of what this man was involved in.

The following author wrote a book about how Aleister Crowley influenced him into witchcraft via tarot cards:
"I referred to my occult dictionary and discovered to my horror -- 'Aleister Crowley--famous Scottish Satanist.'"
-Lon Milo DuQuette, Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot, Weiser Books, 2003, p. 4, ISBN: 9781578632763; The author continues to talk about how he later fell in love with Crowley after being convinced to get involved in Satanism by some friends.

Aleister Crowley was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a group that is involved in high levels of witchcraft:
"Samuel Mathers (1854-1918), a founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, had a significant but indirect influence on modern religious Satanism through Aleister Crowley, a one-time member of the order."
-James R. Lewis, Satanism Today, ABC-CLIO, 2001, p. 169, ISBN: 9781576072929

"Crowley contributed several articles to The English Review under various pseudonyms. Two of these, 'The Great Drug Delusion' and 'The Drug Panic,' described Crowley's attitudes on drug legalization and his emerging theory of addiction. Crowley had experimented with the magical use of drugs, most of which he acquired legally from his chemist."
-Richard Kaczynski, The Weiser Concise Guide to Aleister Crowley, Weiser Books, 2009, p. 29, ISBN: 9781609250744

So Aleister Crowley, to put it mildly, was a Satanic high-level occultist drug addict who ended up creating a religious cult called "Thelema." Thelemites practice witchcraft in combination with many mystic practices from around the world.
"The Greek word Θελημα (Thelema) or Will refers to the legitimate expression of a person's human and divine natures. It may be compared to one's purpose, function, calling, destiny, mission, or similar concept. In accordance with the principle 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law,' Thelemites devote themselves entirely to the discovery and fulfillment of their true Wills. (Note: The value of Thelema (Θελημα) in the Greek Qabalah is 93... This led Crowley to abbreviate the phrase, 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law' as '93'... Thelemites often greet each other with '93.')"
-Richard Kaczynski, The Weiser Concise Guide to Aleister Crowley, Weiser Books, 2009, p. 62, ISBN: 9781609250744

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law... There is no law beyond Do what thou wilt."
-Aleister Crowley, quoted by M. Desti & L. Waddell, Magick: Liber ABA, Vol. 4, Weiser Books, 1997, p. 386, ISBN: 9780877289197

Crowley's "do what thou wilt" philosophy spits in the face of God's teaching to us:

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
-Romans 12:2

And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
-1 John 2:17

"Do what thou wilt" is exactly what Satan has said in his heart. The Devil desires his own will:

How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
-Isaiah 14:12-15

Doing whatever is in your own will ends up fulfilling only the lusts of the heart, and we cannot trust in our hearts.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
-Jeremiah 17:9

But the Bible had no influence over Crowley:
"One would go mad if one took the Bible seriously; but to take it seriously one must be already mad."
-Aleister Crowley, quoted by M. Desti & L. Waddell, Magick: Liber ABA, Vol. 4, Weiser Books, 1997, p. 116, ISBN: 9780877289197

Crowley instead wanted his own will, and he desired human sacrifice:
"For the highest spiritual working one must accordingly choose that victim which contains the greatest and purest force. A male child of perfect innocence and high intelligence is the most satisfactory and suitable victim... Those Magicians who object to the use of blood have endeavored to replace it with incense... But the bloody sacrifice, though more dangerous, is more efficacious; and for nearly all purposes human sacrifice is the best... In the Sacrifice during invocation, however, it may be said without fear of contradiction that the death of the victim should coincide with the supreme invocation."
-Aleister Crowley, quoted by M. Desti & L. Waddell, Magick: Liber ABA, Vol. 4, Weiser Books, 1997, p. 206-207, ISBN: 9780877289197

Crowley performed human sacrifices on children, and according to chapter 15 of his book, the "supreme invocation" Crowley refers to here is actually the height of sexual orgasm, so Crowley was training his followers to get sexual pleasure off the blood of young boys.
"It appears from the Magical Records of FRATER PERDURABO that He made this particular sacrifice [a male child with high intellgence] on an average about 150 times every year between 1912 E.V. and 1928 E.V."
-M. Desti & L. Waddell, Magick: Liber ABA, Vol. 4, Weiser Books, 1997, p. 207, ISBN: 9780877289197

Crowley was often referred to as "The Great Beast" because of his obsession with Satanic worship:
"The Great Beast [Crowley] and his followers were against any kind of religion, in any form, except their own. They held group orgies as a part of their ritual, and included in them the small children the women had brought with them... [concerning paintings in his house] The remainder of the paintings were life-size representations of sexual activity, both homosexual and heterosexual, singly, doubly and in groups, including children. There were also plentiful graffiti, in Crowley's handwriting, all lauding the Great Beast."
Wardell Baxter Pomoroy, Dr. Kinsey and the Institute for Sex Research, Yale University Press, 1972, p. 413-414, ISBN: 9780300029161

demotivational poster creation liberty evangelism aleister crowley uncle fester almost identical except that fester wasn't a satanis or a pedophile or a murderer or performed human sacrifices ya know what nevermind they just look alike creationliberty.com
(A few Christians have made claims to a link between Charles Addams -creator of the Addams Family- and Alesiter Crowley. This author has been unable to find any documentation for that claim. Christians spreading information that isn't authenticated as true is called 'gossip'.)

When Aleister Crowley died in 1947, his poem "Hymn to Pan" was read. 'Pan' is a demonic god he worshiped, and here is an except from that poem:
"Goat of thy flock, I am gold, I am god, Flesh to thy bone, flower to thy rod, With hoofs of steel I race on the rocks Though solstice stubborn to equinox. And I rave; and I rape and I rip and I rend Everlasting, world without end..."
-Aleister Crowley, M. Desti & L. Waddell, Magick: Liber ABA, Vol. 4, Weiser Books, 1997, p. 122, ISBN: 9780877289197

Was Crowley shunned and made an example of wickedness in the history books of the world? No, quite the opposite. Alesiter Crowley was named #73 in the top 100 'Greatest Britons' who ever lived, not based on a committee, but based on a television popularity poll!
(See "Crowley," BBC Press Office, 100 Greatest Britons, retrieved Sept 19, 2013, [http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2002/08_august/21/100_list.shtml]

Most Christians have no idea that much of the core foundation of rock music has come from inspiration of Aleister Crowley, a satanic homosexual pedophilic psychotic killer bathed in witchcraft. I will tell Christians upfront that I don't care how you FEEL about the music you listen to because the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked (Jer 17:9), I'm simply quoting to you who this man is so you can understand that the Devil has chosen styles of music with which he can capture an audience.

In 1971, Jimmy Page, guitarist of the rock band Led Zepplin, purchased Aleister Crowley's House (Boleskine Lodge) on the shore of Lake Loch Ness. This is the house where Crowley would perform his human sacrifices and practice his sex-magic. Later that same year, Led Zepplin released the famous song Stairway to Heaven (one of the highest rated and most profitable rock songs of all time), and on the vinyl album in wax was etched the words "Do What thou Wilt,," and "So Mote Be it," both direct quotations from Crowley's book Magick.
(See Aleister Crowley, M. Desti & L. Waddell, Magick: Liber ABA, Vol. 4, Weiser Books, 1997, p. 590, ISBN: 9780877289197)

Robert Plant, singer for Led Zeppelin, gave his testimony about writing 'Stairway to Heaven':
"I was holding a pencil and paper, and for some reason I was in a very bad mood... Then all of the sudden, my hand was writing out the words, 'There's a lady who's sure / All that glitters is gold, / And she's buying a stairway to heaven.' I just sat there and looked at them and almost leapt out of my seat."
-Robert Plant, quoted by Scott Calef, Led Zeppelin and Philosophy: All Will Be Revealed, Open Court, 2013, p. 10, ISBN: 9780812697766; See also Barney Hoskyns, Led Zeppelin IV, Rodale Books, 2006, p. 94, ISBN: 9781594863707

"Stairway to Heaven," was started by demonic channeling (i.e. demon possessed authorship), and then the rest of their band got together and threw in other ideas. One of those ideas is found in the lyrics, "It's just a spring clean for the May queen," and this is a reference to Aleister Crowley's poem "May Queen."

Scarier still are the references to Satan in Stairway to Heaven when playing the song in reverse. The following video demonstrates a backwards playing of the lyrics in certain parts of their song:

Foreward Lyrics: "If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, its just a spring clean for the may queen. Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on"
Backward Lyrics: "O, Here's to my sweet satan. The one who's little path would make me sad, whose power is satan, He will give those with him 666, There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad satan"

Keep in mind that this is NOT backmasking. Backmasking is when a recording studio inserts messages that can only be understood when a record is played backwards. The recording studio for Led Zeppelin did NOT add in the satanic phrases, they are simply the message that is heard when the song is played in reverse.

Reversed Hidden Messages

Hidden messages have been discovered in a large number of songs and phrases in popular music and television. For example, the children's TV show Dora the Explorer played backwards says, "Hail Satan!" Many people find this unbelievable, but I've read other testimonies of people who have tried this in a recording studio, saying "dora the explorer" into the microphone, and when played in reverse, it comes back as "Hail Satan."
As a Christian, be careful with everything you will see and hear when you research a topic like this because there is a lot of stuff out there that are hoaxes or exaggerations. I've watched a number of believing Christians go way over the top, becoming obsessed with subliminal messages, but the Bible tells us to be simple concerning evil, that we should know the devices of Satan, but not go in huge amounts of detail, learning about things we ought not. There is a lot of rubbish out there, but with examples like Dora the Explorer, the backwards message is very clear.

"One theory underlying backward masking is that selective cognitive processes ordinarily screen out unwanted information. However, when data enters our brain backward, it is not filtered, and somehow the subconscious can translate it to become meaningful. Supposedly, when hearing these songs forward, the brain picks up the backward messages subliminally. Consequently, they can affect one's mind, actions, and personality."
-Geoffrey P. Lantos, Consumer Behavior in Action: Real-Life Applications for Marketing Managers, M.E. Sharpe, 2010, p. 408, ISBN: 9780765629111

Though this author goes on to say that the theory of REVERSED subliminal messaging affecting the mind is not true, but he gives no references to any studies that have been done, and furthermore, there is no study that could conclusively prove reversed messages have no effect on the listener. Long-term effects are possible, and it would be impossible to prove or disprove that those effects were caused by the source message played in reverse hundreds (or thousands) of times.

The Beatles did some designed backmask recording in their album Magic Circle, which included a phrase repeated over and over that said "turn me on dead man." This sparked a controversy about one of the Beatles members being secretly dead. Likewise, in a very non-Christian manner, the Christian rock band Five Iron Frenzy did something similar in their song "The Untimely Death of Brad," inserting the phrase "Brad is dead. Let's kill Brad."

The practice of backwards speech was an occultic technique that was taught by Aleister Crowley, which is why it is used in rock music so frequently. Aleister Crowley said one could obtain "Magical Memory," by learning to speak things backwards, and communication with the spirit world could be established through reversed speech.
-M. Desti & L. Waddell, Magick: Liber ABA, Vol. 4, Weiser Books, 1997, p. 207, ISBN: 9780877289197

Reverse speech is found in a lot of media sources, but most especially in rock genres of music. Here are some more examples:
MUSIC: The Jonas Brothers - Kids of the Future (Reversed)
"I speak for Satan, Satan, Satan; Our sweet forsaken Satan, Satan"

MUSIC: Gwen Stefani - It's My Life (Reversed)
"I love Satan"

TV THEME: Saved by the Bell (Reversed)
"Man I miss my Satan, we're all saved"

MUSIC: Jay-Z Grey Album Interlude (Reversed)
"Murder murder Jesus, 666"

In fact, if you get a recording of Barack Obama saying, "Yes we can!" and play it backwards, you will hear him and the audience chanting "Thank you Satan!"

These kinds of demonic and strange messages are common in rock songs of the past 50 years, but they are not just found in reverse. Often times, links to Crowley and Satanism are found in the forward lyrics, quotations from the musicians, and images they provide. The Beatles, for example, openly claimed Crowley as a personal influence.

In 1967, the Beatles released an album called "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," that showed many peoples faces throughout history. When asked about these faces, Paul McCartney said in an interview:
"The cover was going to be us dressed as this other band in crazy gear... And we were going to have photos on the wall of all our heroes: Marlon Brando in his leather jacket, Einstein--it could be anybody who we'd ever thought was good. Cult heroes."
-Paul McCartney, quoted by Tony Scherman, The Rock Musician: 15 Years of the Interviews - The Best of Musician Magazine, Macmillian, 1994, p. 28, ISBN: 9780312304614

So who are these 'heroes' and 'good men' on the cover of the album? The Beatles portrayed some very wicked people, including a number of Hindu occultists, but Aleister Crowley is featured in the top row.
Satanist Aleister Crowley was a personal hero of the Beatles.

Playboy Magazine's interview with John Lennon further demonstrates the Beatles influence by Crowley:
"What's this game of doing things because other people want it? The whole Beatle idea was to do what you want, right? To take your own responsibility, do what you want and try not to harm other people, right? Do what thou wilst, as long as it doesn't hurt somebody."
-John Lennon, quoted by David Sheff, All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Macmillan, 2010, p. 72, ISBN: 9781429958080

Many people want to write off these connections as just "coincicdence" or that it has nothing to do with satanism, but the Bible tells us that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God (Luk 16:15), so it wasn't the power of God that put the Beatles where they are today.

"It never seems to be possible to describe Aleister Crowley without hyperbole as: the 'Wickedest Man in the World', Beast 666, 'poet, painter, chess master, lecher, drug addict and magician' (Wheatley, introduction to Crowley 1929/1974), 'the Picasso of the Occult... bridges the gap between Oscar Wilde and Hitler' (Cyril Connolly, Sunday Times), 'the unsung hero of the hippies' (International Times)."
-Steve Chibnall & Julian Petley, British Horror Cinema, Psychology Press, 2002, p. 86, ISBN: 9780415230032

David Bowie has been loved by the world, receiving music awards, actor awards, given honorary doctorates, and was offered to be knighted by the British government in 2003, but he has also openly admitted to being a sodomite, heavy drug user, and Satanist. Bowie has a song called "Quicksand" that reads as follows:
I'm closer to the Golden Dawn
Immersed in Crowley's uniform
(Again, the Golden Dawn is a witchcraft cult Crowley influenced with Satanism.)

Daryl Hall from the band Hall and Oates said:
"Around 1974, I graduated into the occult, and spent a solid six or seven years immersed in the cabala and the Chaldean, Celtic, and druidic traditions, [and] ancient techniques for focusing the inner flame, the will that can create unimagined things and truly transform your individual universe. I also became fascinated with Aleister Crowley, the nineteeth-century British magician who shared these beliefs...
I was fascinated by [Crowley] becauses his personality was the late-nineteeth-century equivalent of mine--a person brought up in a conventionally religious family who did everything he could to outrage the people around him as well as himself."
-Daryl Hall, quoted by Jonas E. Alexis, In the Name of Education, Xulon Press, 2007, p. 137, ISBN: 9781600347603; Read "Halloween: Are Christians Lovers of Death?" here at creationliberty.com for more details on the druidic traditions.

Satanic artist Marilyn Manson (member of the Church of Satan), who is well-known for performing demonic acts live on stage (like deficating on a crucifix and alter calls for people to denounce Jesus Christ), also followed after Crowley with his 'music'. Manson has a song called "Misery Machine" that contains the following lyrics:
"Man in the front got a sinister grin,
careen down highway 666...
We're gonna' ride to the abbey of Thelema"

The 'abbey of Thelema' is the church of the cult started by Aleister Crowley.

Ozzy Osbourne, lead singer of the band Black Sabbath, wrote a song called "Nativity in Black" on his first album that was a first-person invitation to join Satan, saying, "My name is Lucifer, please take my hand!" Osbourne was introduced by Marilyn Manson in his 'Walk of Fame Ceremony' when he received a star on the Hollywood sidewalk:
"This star right here proves that it's quite obvious that Ozzy has managed to succeed while remaining insane and strangely happy despite his various crimes against God and nature."
-Marilyn Manson, quoted by American Broadcasting Company, "Ozzy Osbourne Gets Hollywood Star," ABCNews.com, retrieved Sept 24, 2013, [http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=101221&page=1]

Ozzy Osbourne wrote a song called "Mr. Crowley," which refers to (yep, you guessed it) Aleister Crowley:
"Mr. Crowley, what went wrong in your head?
Oh, Mr. Crowley, did you talk with the dead
Your life style to me seemed so tragic...
You fooled all the people with magic
You waited on Satan's call...
Mr. Crowley, won't you ride my white horse

I wanna know what you meant

He dedicated entire albums to Aleister Crowley:
"It was hype when I started, but I really learned to believe in the devil. I dedicated The Blizzard of Oz to Aleister Crowley."
-Ozzy Osbourne, quoted by Eric Barger, From Rock to Rock: The Music of Darkness Exposed!, Huntington House, 1990, p. 133, ISBN: 9780910311618
The Beach Boys also involved themselves in witchcraft, allowing themselves to be possessed by demonic spirits.
"We were all messed up on drugs. We were doing witchcraft, trying to make witchcraft music. I was stoned on hashish and grass and I got a little too much into this one tape called 'Fire'. Then, a place down the street burned down the same day we did the song."
-Brian Wilson, quoted by Nick Kent & Iggy Pop, The Dark Stuff: Selected Writings on Rock Music Updated Edition, Da Capo Press, 2009, p. 43, ISBN: 9780786730742
Brian Wilson tried all sorts of witchcraft practices to get "the voices" to come to him and give him his music, but eventually, he couldn't turn them off.
"He was getting these scary acid flash-backs too, as well as these voices inside his head. They weren't saying anything too distinct yet, just making this dark, ghostly murmuring sound back there in the lower recesses of his brain."
-Brian Wilson, quoted by Nick Kent & Iggy Pop, The Dark Stuff: Selected Writings on Rock Music Updated Edition, Da Capo Press, 2009, p. 39-40, ISBN: 9780786730742

"...all the voices in his [Brian Wilson's] head now interrupting his thoughts like static on an ill-tuned radio forever muttering, 'You're finished, you're washed-up! You've lost the plot, ***hole, and you've lost your mind! You played with God and messed with forces that can only destroy you'"
-Brian Wilson, quoted by Nick Kent & Iggy Pop, The Dark Stuff: Selected Writings on Rock Music Updated Edition, Da Capo Press, 2009, p. 49, ISBN: 9780786730742

"Rolling Stones magazine has this to say of Brian Wilson, song-writer and singer for the Beach Boys: 'Brian Wilson hears voices. They talk to him. They frighten him, distract him, confuse him... the voices are calling. His eyes roll toward the ceiling; they've gone blank. His brow is furrowed with thick worry lines. He is silent. Gone. He looks up, jerks his head back and forth for a few seconds, as if physically shaking away the voices.'"
-Jonas E. Alexis, Christianity's Dangerous Idea, AuthorHouse, 2010, p. 342, ISBN: 9781452006116

The demon-possesion and devil-worship involved in rock music could fill up many volumes of a library. This is just a small fraction of the KNOWN Satanists and witches involved in the music industry, let alone all the ones who are not so forth-coming about their dabbling with demonic forces.

So what does all this have to do with Christian rock?
As the younger generations would turn to worshiping music instead of Jesus Christ, and due to the fact that people were getting so addicted to this type of music, some folks claiming to be Christians foolishly attempted to counter this by using the Devil's choice music to try and create "praise" music towards God.
Rock music is Satanically inspired!

A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
-Matthew 7:18

Some artists have been blatantly honest about this, but most "Christian" rockers will ignore their statements. Jerry Lee Lewis for example, who is known as "rock & roll's first great wild man" and "the killer," stated directly that he was playing for Satan.
"When Jerry played a 'boogie woogie' rendition of 'My God Is Real' at a church assembly, school administrators sent him packing that night. Years later, a fellow student at the school asked Jerry if he was still playing the devil's music. He said, 'Yes, I am. But you know it's strange, the same music they kicked me out of school for is the same kind of music they play in their churches today. The difference is I know I'm playing for the devil and they don't.'"
-Roderick Biddings, Music to God's Ears, Xulon Press, 2010, p. 139, ISBN: 9781615798728

(Jerry Lee Lewis debates with Sam Phillips in 1957 during a recording of "Great Balls of Fire.")
@2:50, Phillips suggests that Lewis can save souls, to which Lewis responds: "No! No! No! No! How can the devil save souls?! What are you talking about!? Man, I got the devil in me! If I didn't have I'd be a Christian! Jesus... he cast the devil out... I don't care what you believe, it's what's written in the bible. It's what's there Mr. Phillips."

God doesn't tell us to gather together the devices of Satan and use them. We are to understand his devices, and avoid them.

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
-2 Corinthians 2:11

I have people write me frequently and say that God can use anything, and I firmly disagree. God can't use lies, and He specifically says He hates them, so that argument doesn't work. However, I say to those people, "Yes, God CAN use many things, but that doesn't mean He WILL use them." Christians: Just because you personally like something, doesn't mean it's of God, and it doesn't mean God's going to use whatever you personally like because you are not God. We need to understand the evil devices of Satan, and of men, separate ourselves from them, and be on guard against them.

The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
-Psalm 33:10

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
-2 Corinthians 6:14

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
-Ephesians 5:8-11

I too used to listen to wicked rock bands; my favorites growing being Metallica and Nirvana, but I got rid of them immediately when the Lord showed me what they were doing to me on a spiritual level. Just because I personally liked them, doesn't mean they are good for me. Even today, I still would enjoy listening to some of their songs, so I do my best to avoid the songs of those bands when I hear them in a public place. (If fact, I've personally stopped listening to the radio altogether because I've been so convicted on this issue.)

Did I want to stop listening to the music I liked? No, I wanted to listen to what I wanted, and I thought it was just harmless tunes. The Lord protected me in my ignorance because Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, was a Satan worshipper himself (by his own admission, as we will see later in this article), and likewise Metallica were also Satanists, having song lyrics reading "Angel from below... I wish to sell my soul... Devil take my soul... I don't care for heaven... and I will burn in hell." (Metallica - "The Prince")

After getting rid of the rock bands, I turned to Christian rocks bands, and I thought it was good spiritual worship, but little did I know at the time that I was not getting fed the Word of God. Not only was the Devil's choice music being used by these "Christian" singers (trying to get good fruit from an evil tree), most of the words are useless and have little to do with edification and praise to the Jesus Christ of the Bible.

The man given credit as being the first "Christian rock artist" was Larry Norman, who, in this author's opinion, set the standards of what the world was willing to accept as "Christian rock." The major rule I've seen in what is considered standard Christian rock that is acceptable to the music industry are those which lyrics are vague and/or self-centered, and it has to be that way so they can sell more albums. (i.e. It has to be suitable for other popular false religions to accept so the band will make more money.)
Here is a portion of Norman's hit song "I Love You" which peaked at #7 on the Billboard chart in June 1968:
"I Love You" -- Larry Norman
We can be together for now and forever,
I love you, I love you,
Hey can you hear me, I've got to have you near me,
I love you, I love.
I was lonely till you came along,
Now you've got me singing your love-song.
I love you, I love you, I love you.
Notice two things:
1. It is vague, open to one's own interpretation.
2. It is self-centered, focusing upon one's own feelings.

What does this man's song have to do with the Bible? In fact, when I was doing research for this article, I looked up this song on youtube since I had never heard it before, and the videos I found had compilations of images showing men and women kissing and hugging each other, meaning that the lyrics are vague enough to allow listeners to interpret the song in a carnal/fleshly manner for romance between a man and woman instead of the Lord God, and this is why such music will increase sales and be accepted by the world.

And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
-Luke 16:15

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
-1 John 2:15

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
-1 Timothy 6:10

In comparison, let's look at a true Christian hymn:
How Great Thou Art
And when I think of God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Notice two things:
1. It is specific, pointing directly to God's Word.
2. It is Christ-centered, focusing upon the Gospel of Jesus.

NOTE: Don't Write Me Asking to Analyze Songs For You

Over the years, I've had many people send me song lyrics and music videos, asking for me to tell them whether it's good or bad. Let me save you the trouble and tell you now, I won't do it, and I'll explain why.

I, Chris Johnson, am not the final authority in all matters of faith and practice, and I am not the decider of all truth, nor am I the source of knowledge for all discernment. The Lord God is the source of knowledge for discernment, and this article is designed to help train Christians to discern FOR THEMSELVES what music is good or bad.

But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
-Hebrews 5:14

In the end, I would have to end up writing countless pages of analysis of every song ever written; thousands upon thousands of pages that would consume my entire life. I'm simply not going to do that. I would much rather train Christians to discern these things for themselves, and many people have gotten angry with me because I've refused to analyze a particular song they sent me, and that's usually because they're so used to having a "pastor-king" who they treat like a Catholic priest, telling them what to do in all things and how they should go about doing it; I refuse to be your priest.

You are responsible for what you listen to, and you are the decider of your own household; I'm not the leader of your house, and I'm not held responsible for your choices. So please continue to finish reading this article, learn the danger of new-age "Christian" rock and CCM, and then make an educated, discerning decision for yourself and your household.

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
-2 Peter 1:20

Whereas the Word of God, and those who reference to God's Word in hymns and song, give a direct link to the specificity of the Lord Jesus Christ, most new-age music has no specificity, and because of that, you must turn to private interpretation to get the meaning. This is why there are so many websites out there that are dedicated solely to interpreting the meaning of songs, because they are so vague, one cannot know the full meaning until they speak with an interpreter, or one just makes up their own interpretation.

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
-John 4:23-24

Biblical hymns give praise to Almighty God in His awesome wonder, the grand sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ, and His mercy and grace, not to our selfish feelings and desires. Most importantly, real worship of God teaches the truth of His Word, and if those songs do not teach the truth, then they are NOT worship of God.

To demonstrate this, let's look at portions of other modern-Christian songs (pulled from top 100 chart lists in the past 15 years) versus classic praise hymns:
Leah Shafer - "In Better Hands Now"
Love Thyself Last
Itís hard to stand on shifting sand
Itís hard to shine in the shadows of the night
You canít be free if you donít reach for help
You canít love if you dont love yourself
There is hope when my faith runs out
Cause Iím in better hands now
Love thyself last.
Look near, behold thy duty
To those who walk beside thee down lifeís road
Make glad their days by little acts of beauty,
And help them bear the burden of earthís load.
(Read "False Doctrine: Learn to Love Yourself" here at creationliberty.com for more details.)

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves... Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
-2 Timothy 3:1-5

Mandisa - "Overcomer"
Jesus Paid It All
Staring at a stop sign
Watching people drive by
T Mac on the radio
Got so much on your mind
Nothing's really going right
Looking for a ray of hope
You're an overcomer
Stay in the fight Ďtil the final round
You're not going under
ĎCause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it's hopeless
That's when He reminds You
That you're an overcomer

You're an overcomer
I hear the Savior say,
"Thy strength indeed is small;
Child of weakness
, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all."
Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe;
Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow.
For nothing good have I
Whereby Thy grace to claim,
Iíll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calvíryís Lamb.
And now complete in Him
My robe His righteousness,
Close sheltered íneath His side,
I am divinely blest.

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
-Revelation 3:17

O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.
-Psalm 6:2

Chris Tomlin - "God's Great Dance Floor"
To God Be The Glory
Iím coming back to the start
Where You found me
Iím coming back to Your heart
Now I surrender, Take me
This is all I can bring
I feel alive, I come alive
I am alive on Godís great dance floor
I feel alive, I come alive
I am alive on Godís great dance floor
I feel alive, I come alive
I am alive on Godís great dance floor
To God be the glory, great things He has done
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory,
great things He has done
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Notice that the left hand column songs never describes oneself as wretched, poor, weak, feeble, vile, or anything that would be considered "negative" in new-age churchianity. These artists always puff themselves up, and any talk is of what they want, or what makes them feel good, and any talk of "God" is in reference to God supposedly giving them what they want and making them feel good about it. (i.e. It's not worship of God.)

Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.
-Psalm 47:6-7

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
-Psalm 51:14

There are hymns that talk of oneself, but they don't refer to themselves in a "positive" manner, and it is not selfish. The "me" referred to in hymns talks about the change 'Jesus has made in me', or the things 'Jesus has done for me', and they always refer to themselves (mankind) as lost, naked, and weary. Let's take a look at another example to see this difference:
Building 429 - "Where I Belong"
It Is Well With My Soul
Sometimes it feels like
I'm watching
from the outside
Sometimes it feels like
I'm breathing
but am I alive
I won't keep searching for answers
that aren't here to find
All I know is I'm not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong
So when the walls come falling down on me
And when I'm lost
in the current of a raging sea
I have this blessed assurance holding me.
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Though Satan should buffet,
though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
And Lord, haste the day
when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound,
and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

NOTE: Some people calling themselves "Christians" have written me in defense of their obsessions with rock music, claiming that the Gospel hymn is self-centered because it uses the word "my" in the phrase "it is well with my soul." If one does not understand 4th grade English sentence structure, it's understandable why they would be confused.
The full sentence is "Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say 'it is well with my soul'," which is not focused on oneself, (verbs "taught" and "say") but what the Lord Jesus Christ has taught us to say. When Building 429 says "it" in the phrase "it feels like I'm watching from the outside" they are referring to their own feelings in their own lives from their own perspectives. Even the phrase "take this world and give me Jesus," is not worship of God, as it is a man saying what he wants in his own life, not for what the Lord has done on his behalf.
Others have claimed that a Christian song/hymn does not have to be edifying to be praise towards God, but that is not what the Bible teaches us. Some will say there is a "reductionist" fallacy (meaning that one can logically break down music into individual parts to declare if it is of God or not), but there is no fallacy when Psalm (God's Word) gives us instruction for how to design a truly Biblical praise of the Lord God:

Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious. Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee. All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Come and see the works of God: he is terrible in his doing toward the children of men... For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried... Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul.
-Psalm 66:2-16

This is a just a small sample of what the Bible teaches us a Christian song should be, and bands like Building 429 do not sing to the praises of God as much as they sing to the praises of themselves. (e.g. "This is not where I belong" -- There is no talk of grace in this song because if we got what we deserved, we'd end up in hell!) As a Christian, be cautious because those that have developed unbiblical addictions to rock music because they will say anything, no matter how absurd, to justify their pet sins.

Here is the story of why "It Is Well With My Soul" was written:
"Haratio G. Spafford (1828-88) was a successful Chicago lawyer... In 1873, upon the advice of his family physician, Spafford planned a restful European vacation for his family. His wife was in poor health, and he had sustained losses in the Chicago fire of 1871 as well as in failed real estate ventures. Due to urgent business matters needing his attention, however, Spafford had to remain in Chicago and could not travel with his family as planned. Hence, he sent his wife and four young daughters (ages 2 to 11) to Europe as scheduled on the luxurious French liner Ville du Havre in November, 1873. He planned to follow in a few days. On November 22, the Ville du Havre was struck by a great iron sailing vessel, the English ship Lochearn, and sank within twelve minutes. Mrs. Spafford was saved; sadly though, her four daughters had drowned. When the survivors of the disaster landed at Cardiff, Wales, several days later, Mrs. Spafford cabled her husband, 'Saved Alone.' Soon afterward, Horatio Spafford left by ship to be with his wife. On the high seas, near the scene of the tragedy, which was pointed out to him by the ship's captain, Spafford wrote the words to the hymnsong "It is Well with My Soul," the first verse of which reads: When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea-billows roll, Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say; It is well, it is well with my soul."
-Robert J. Garofalo, On a Hymn Song of Philip Bliss, Hal Leonard Corporation, 2000, p. 25-26, ISBN: 9780634019760

O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea:
-Isaiah 48:18
"When peace like a river..."

Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
-Psalm 42:7
"...like sea-billows roll..."

For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
-Jonah 2:3

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
-Romans 8:28

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
-1 Thessalonians 5:18
"Thou has taught me to say; It is well..."

Spafford knew his Scripture, and he wrote those words in praise to Almighty God in the face of overwhelming sorrow in a purely Biblical perspective. And why did Jason Roy of Building 429 write "Where I Belong?"
"What was interesting about 'Where I Belong' is if you watch God move and you watch Him show up and do things that are ridiculous and impossible--that is really what that last record felt like it was. It felt like it was God saying, 'I got this, guy.' You know what I mean? Like, 'This is not going to be possible without Me.' That's the one thing we knew for a fact when we finished. What it does, though, is it gives you a different level of confidence walking into the next season. For this new record, I don't know, it's one of those weird things where there's never a doubt of what we were trying to accomplish, there was never a doubt that we were going to make a better record than before,"
-Jason Roy, quoted by Hannah Goodwyn, "Building 429's Jason Roy 'Won't Be Shaken'," Christian Broadcasting Network: Music, retrieved Sept 23, 2013, [www.cbnmusic.com]

Come on, all you positivity-movement, new-age "Christians" reading this article: Can't you just FEEL the inspiration coming from Mr. Roy? You just gotta', like, ya know, dig deep in urself, and like, FEEL it, ya know, man, and it's like, God's like, 'I got this, dog.' They call this "Christian" music, but the reality is that it's apostasy.

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
-Ecclesiates 7:5

In defense of their Christian rock music, I have received emails from people who claim that some of the lyrics to the newer songs are written as messages from God. Well, let's see if Christians reading this can recognize this song:
I would not leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I take you just the way you are
Ah, what will it take till you believe in me?
The way that I believe in you?
I said I love you and that's forever
And this I promise from the heart
But I couldn't love you any better
I love you just the way you are
Can't tell where that's from? That's because this is NOT a Christian song. These are secular romance lyrics from alcoholic Billy Joel's song, "Just The Way You Are."

I tested out these lyrics on some Christians to see what response I would get, asking them if they could recognize this song, and I read Billy Joel's lyrics listed above. I got the response, "This is not a Christian song." I revealed that it was Billy Joel. Then I asked them to recoginze the next song:
Despite the lies that you're making
Your love is mine for the taking
My love is Just waiting
To turn your tears to roses
I will be the one that's gonna hold you
I will be the one that you run to
My love is A burning, consuming fire
I got the response, "This is not a Christian song either," and to their surprise, I revealed that I had just read them lyrics from Skillet's hit song, "Whispers in the Dark," considered one of the top Christian rock songs today. Today's modern Christian songs are removing the power of Jesus Christ from their music.

I know that many people who love these bands will hate me without a cause secretly in their hearts, but I want them to know the truth. This new-age "Christian" music is of the world, not of the Lord Jesus Christ.

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
-John 15:19

Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
-Galatians 4:16

For example, one of my favorite bands during my "Christian" rock phase was DC Talk. Time Magazine interviewed Kevin Max of DC Talk:
"Social critics have long debated whether rock 'n' roll is the devil's music or heaven inspired. The latest Billboard album charts should add fuel to that theological fire. Last week dc TALK's album Supernatural debuted at No. 4, landing between Psychic [Psycho] Circus by KISS at No. 3 and Mechanical Animal by Marilyn Manson at No. 5. But while the demonic Manson courts controversy and the geriatric KISS covets relevance, dc TALK is appealing to a higher power. The Christian rockers consider the Almighty their greatest musical influence. Asked his opinion of Manson, whose last album was titled Antichrist Superstar, dc Talk's Kevin Max said, 'I'd love to hang with him and discuss 80s music.' Maybe they should talk literature. Manson's autobiography was titled Long Road out of Hell."
-H.R. Luce, Time, Time Inc, Vol. 152, Issue 10-17, 1998, p. 125

Be not thou envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.
-Proverbs 24:1

It seems that Time Magazine has more discernment than Kevin Max! Even the author of that Time article is wondering why Kevin Max is getting himself yoked up with Marilyn Manson, a student of the satanist Aleister Crowley, but Kevin Max and his followers seem to be oblivious to what the Bible says.

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?... Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
-2 Corinthians 6:14-17

But Kevin Max ignores the Bible, and wants to 'hang' with Marilyn (Charles) Manson, a man who is a Reverend of the Church of Satan! Manson has defecated on a cross of Jesus live on stage, while encouraging his audience to reject Jesus Christ and participate in acts of sodomy. And dc Talk debuts with satanic rock bands on every side of them, yoking themselves up with darkness.

Christians Losing Discernment

To give an example of thinking of those who listen to "heavy metal," I had a few email exchanges with a young man who emailed me asking why it was wrong for him to listen to Christian metal. He believed that he was helping people to be saved by Jesus Christ because he was relating to them with that music, and he used 1 Cor 9 as a reference to back up his claim (something his youth pastor probably taught him).

For though I be free from all [men], yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all [men], that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with [you].
-1 Corinthians 9:19-22

With this verse, the young man wrote to me, "Paul said that you have to become waht [sic] you must to relate to people to enable them to be saved."

I asked him a question to gauge who I was talking to, and whether or not he studied the Word of God to have a proper understanding of what Paul was writing in 1 Corinthians, "Let's assume your interpretation of this scripture for a moment. Does that mean if I want to reach pagans, I must start practicing witchcraft, and God approves of me practicing witchcraft?"

He responded, "If you consider the gospel put into a secular band to be witchcraft then yes and I'd also say God approves of that. I don't know about you but I can't see sin in that."
(Read "Halloween: Are Christians Lovers of Death?" here at creationliberty.com for more details about the sin of witchcraft.)

If Phil is saved (I don't know him well enough to know if he is or isn't), he obviously has no discernment of Scripture because even though witchcraft is labeled as abomination unto God, this young man believes that using sin will preach the Gospel, and as long as sin is put into a music form that he likes, he believes there's nothing wrong with it. (i.e. He's judging his music by his peronsal feelings, not by the Word of God.) As I have written before in many articles, we cannot pick out one section of a verse and make an entire doctrine out of it when there are other correlating verses we must take into consideration to establish a proper interpretation of Scripture. We don't become alcoholics to save drunkards, we don't become slothful to save the lazy, and we don't become witches to save pagans because we don't use our liberty in Christ to satisfy our flesh.

For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
-Galatians 5:13

A guy named Mike also wrote me with a similar argument, saying, "1 Cor 9:20 has been taken out of context many times, true. But if it doesn't mean adapting who we are to the customs of those around you in order to win souls what does it mean?"

For example, money is not evil, but the love of money is evil. The Bible condemns the obsession over material things. Money does not have a conscience; good can be done with money, and evil can be done with money. The Bible tells us that one day, money is going to be converted into a system where the mark of the beast will be involved (Rev 13:17), and that is a device of Satan. When Satanism gets into our currency, what does the Bible say to do? DO NOT TAKE THAT MARK under any circumstance. (Rev 14:11) Will you be able to use money (buy/sell) if you don't take the mark? No. God is showing us that when money goes Satanic, you should not have anything to do with it, and God takes it so seriously, that Revelation 14 describes people going directly to hell for taking that mark.

Likewise, music is not evil, but the obsession with music is evil. Music does not have a conscience; good can be done with music, and evil can be done with music. But when Satanism is poured into music, should we (as born-again Christians) turn around and use that music for God's glory? Be careful how you answer that question, because to say 'yes' is the same as saying, "I will take the mark of the beast and use it for God's glory." There is a line God draws on what we do, but Christians today tend to take a lackluster approach to the devices of Satan.

I'm not saying a Christian isn't saved because he/she listens to rock/metal music, but I am saying that many use that music to replace studying the Word of God, and what you listen to WILL affect your mind and heart. Many are addicted to the music, and in unrighteous fashion, end up using God's Word as a justification for their carnal addiction. The young men who emailed me have spent so much time listening to the teaching of Christian rock, they have lost sight of what the Word of God teaches us. Though there may be Christians who listen to that type of music, it can destroy their discernment, and Satan will take advantage of them.

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
-2 Corinthians 2:11

In fact, the term 'metal' comes from the term 'heavy metal', which was a combination of the already-familiar modern use of the adjective 'heavy', which was something to be taken seriously, as in a weighty matter, and 'metal', which was referring to the manufacturing of large weapons (tanks, guns, etc). The name 'heavy metal' is directly associated with destruction and death, which is why so many movies play heavy metal music while they are driving big guns around.
Heavy metal is nearly always associated with destruction and death, while rock is associated often with sex, so the term 'heavy metal rock' is a combined influence of sex, destruction, and death. (There are now music genres called 'sex metal' and 'death metal'.)

But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
-Proverbs 8:36

These "Christian" rock performers are assisting in the church of Jesus Christ losing discernment between good and evil, not only because many who get into Christian rock replace the study of God's Word with music (while thinking they're serving the Lord by what they're listening to), but also that most of the words to these songs are very self-centered.

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
-Isaiah 5:20

What Does God's Music Sound Like?

This is a ludicrous question that's posed by "Christian" rockers. They know full-well that this cannot be answered, unless you die, go to heaven, hear God's music, and come back to life, which is literally what they expect in order to discredit their beloved lust for rock-n-roll.

It would probably be impossible for us to replicate God's music, as Paul, who actually went to heaven when he died, came back and said that "eye hath not seen, nor ear heard," (1Co 2:9) meaning that there are brand new sounds we've never heard there. However, although I do not know what God's music sounds like, I do know what Satan's music sounds like, and Satan has chosen rock to spead his wicked doctrines; a fact which commonly gets ignored by those who love their rock more than Christ.

Continuing with DC Talk as a popular example, there is a song I used to really like called 'In the Light', and this is a short part of the song. While reading this, pay attention to how self-focused the words are:
"In the Light" -- DC Talk
I keep trying to find a life
On my own, apart from You
I am the king of excuses
I've got one for every selfish thing I do
What's going on inside of me?
I despise my own behavior
This only serves to confirm my suspicions
That I'm still a man in need of a Savior
I wanna be in the Light
As You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens
Oh, Lord be my Light and be my salvation
Cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want is to be in the Light
All this song is doing is teaching people about what DC Talk personally believes they want, focusing on their own will, and not the will of God. Many who love Christian rock will be undiscerning when reading these lyrics (seeing nothing wrong with them) because they have listened to this song so much more than they read their bibles, they have had their consciences seared (1Ti 4:2), but the fact is these lyrics alone speak against the doctrine we have learned from the Word of God. "I want to be in the Light," is not what the Bible says because the Bible tells us that no one seeks after God.

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
-Romans 3:10-11

The phrase "This only serves to confirm MY suspicions," puts emphasis on man coming to his own conclusions, and seeking after God on his own because he 'suspected' that he needed to do so. This is NOT Biblical teaching:

And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
-2 Timothy 2:24-25

God gives men repentance to acknowledge the truth, not based on our own suspicions. This song is more of a "come join the party" than a Gospel message. Some Christians will try to justify a song like this because it talks about Jesus Christ, but I say to them that Mormons talk about Jesus Christ too and they teach false Gospel, so just because someone talks about Jesus Christ, doesn't automatically mean it's talking the Jesus Christ of the Bible, doesn't automatically mean the song is Biblical, and doesn't automatically make it a worship of God.
(Read "Corruptions of Christianity: Mormonism" here at creationliberty.com for more details.)

In fact, if you go look all the lyrics of DC Talk's "In the Light," you'll notice that this sentence alone mentions Jesus Christ more than their entire song. That's right: "In the Light" doesn't even mention God or Jesus, nor does it have any lyrics that reference to the Christian God of the Bible and the doctrines of Jesus Christ, and those vague lyrics (as aforementioned) are exactly why this song has become so popular; it appeals to many false pagan religions around the world, pointing to a vague "lord" and vague "savior" that anyone can apply to their own false gods.

DC Talk singer Kevin Max explains that their music is for the world, not for the Lord Jesus Christ:
"My music is for a Christian and a Buddhist to pick up and still enjoy, as well as for an atheist."
-Kevin Max, quoted in an interview, "Kevin Max Ready to Release 'The Blood' This Fall," Soul Shine, Apr 20, 2007, retrieved May 17, 2014

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
-Matthew 7:13

Another interesting fact about this song is that it is not original to DC Talk, even though many people believe they created it. It was originally written by a man named Charlie Peacock, and DC Talk removed some of the only verses of the song that pointed to Jesus Christ:
"In the Light" -- Charlie Peacock
Is there such a thing as a man of peace?
If there is, then a man of peace I want to be
I will need your help if I`m ever to be that
If I`m to lay down, lay down, lay down
Then I`ll lay my life for my brothers and sisters
I will need your help, Jesus I need your light
Of course, the problem is still that it is self-centered, nothing has changed there, but at least it talks of needing Jesus's light, needing His help, and laying down one's life for the brethren. DC Talk remove these concepts, and it helps make them millions.

Many people who like DC Talk will get upset with me, but they don't understand that I like DC Talk's music too. I used to listen to them all the time when I was a teenager. Their music is very catchy, and I still like some of their tunes to this day, but the fact is that their music is self-centered, anti-scriptural, and worldly to such an extent that I stay away from listening to them because, as a born-again Christian studying God's Word, the Lord Jesus Christ has given me discernment to understand that listening to those lyrics will corrupt the truth that God has taught me in the Bible. You will find that the average person claiming to be a Christian, who also listens to this new-age "Christian" rock will spend FAR more time listening to these songs than reading/studying Scripture, and what we feed ourselves will affect our faith.

Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.
-Psalm 47:6-7

Most of the modern music that is being produced today under the "Christian" label are singing vague music that the world will accept, but it lacks the understanding and wisdom of the Word of God. So many people say that a "Christian" rock song increased their faith, but I know that's a lie in most cases because when the song has nothing from the Word of God, it is void of anything that can produce faith.

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
-Romans 10:17

Many Christians think they can get the best of both worlds in "Christian" rock, not having to give up what they enjoy to adhere to God's Word, but the fact is that most of the music is opening people up to false doctrine. We can't serve two masters, and those people who think we can do not believe what God's Word teaches us.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
-Matthew 6:24

Modern "Christian" Music Poisons True Worship

Though not an example of rock music, another example of a self-focused song would be "Mary Did You Know" written by Buddy Greene. The popular song was written for a "Living Christmas Tree" choir presentation at request of a pastor to Greene in 1984, which means it was written in honor of a pagan holiday.
(Read "Where Did Christmas Come From?" here at creationliberty.com for more details)

"Mary Did You Know" -- Buddy Greene
Mary did you know that your baby boy
would one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy
would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
has come to make you new?
The child you delivered will soon deilver you.

Who is this song geared towards? Not Jesus Christ, but Mary! That's why this song is so popular in Catholic circles. Women also hear the words of the song, and they start thinking about themselves (not about Jesus Christ), and thinking about what it is like to bear children, and what it would be like to be in Mary's shoes. This song is geared towards thinking about Mary, and thinking about oneself in Mary's position; this is not actually praising the Lord God at all.

When analyzing a song, turn off the music, look up the lyrics, and read them without any musical influence. Often, a discerning Christian that studies God's Word will find a surprising lack of Biblical foundation when analyzing the music they listen to, which is why so few people do it.

Other types of music have the same effect, seeking to give a blind Christian audience an emotional high by repeating basic phrases. The song "Awesome God" by Rich Mullins is a great example, not because the song is bad (as there are some good lyrics to it), but because the lyrics are almost always ignored, and the main chorus is just sung over and over and over to keep an emotional high in the audience. (i.e. Praise sessions in churches anymore are more about getting an emotional high, than about worshiping the Lord Jesus Christ, because people tend to give more when they're at an emotional peak.)

As Christians, please don't take this article as an attack on all modern Christian music, because there exist some that are true worship of the Lord Jesus Christ, but understand that we need to discern what is of God and what is not, and not let our emotions get in the way of righteous judgement.

In the end, what the Christian really enjoys is the music, and that's their obsession, so rather than give up what is anti-Biblical, they seek to justify it and make excuses for it. They want the joy and peace of Jesus Christ without having to suffer giving up their pet sins.

The obsession with musical entertainment in the church is sickening to behold. There is a pastor of a church less than a block from where we live that I have spoken with over the phone, trying to schedule to sit down with him to give a creation presentation to their congregation, but he has dodged me for four years running, yet every other week, there are new signs and flyers all over town for the next big gospel singing group he has scheduled for his flock's entertainment. He knows that if he starts working on Biblical education, instead of entertainment, he'll lose his job and salary, and they'll be happy to give it to someone else who will give them bread and circus.

I've received emails from many people claiming to be Christians, but in the end, their letters portray men/women that are lovers of musical pleasures more than lovers of God, who attend their undiscerning new-age church that doesn't rebuke them, never coming to the truth of the matter, and will despise me for trying to tell them the truth.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away... Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
-2 Timothy 3:1-9

Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
-Galatians 4:16

Is it a sin to hear a DC Talk song? No, you're not going to burst into flames because you heard a DC Talk song, but it is dangerous to repeatedly fill your mind and heart (temple of God - 1Cr 3:16) with the same corruption of false doctrine (no matter what form it's in), and a born-again Christian who hears false doctrine being sung will begin to despise that music by conviction of the Holy Spirit, not embrace it.

As a born-again Christian, it is getting harder each year to be separate from the world. We are in an "information-age" where digital technology has made possible what seemed impossible just a couple hundred years ago. We are flooded with movies, TV shows, music, websites, blogs, apps, social media, and everything else you can think of, but most of it comes from minds of those who are looking to make money.

A representative of Nashville's Forefront Records, a Christian rock producing company, said:
"One of the stances that we take and that I take in my personal life is that our God through Christ is a God of redemption--he redeems all sorts of things. I don't think you can make music the culprit. People who live the (rock 'n roll) lifestyle live that kind of lifestyle whether they work construction or play rock music. I think that if you start damning any style of music you find yourself in a very awkward theological position of having to describe what kind of music God likes."
-Michael Henningsen, "Despite doubters and detractors, Christian music is the fastest-growing segment of the music industry," Monterey County Weekly, July 30, 1998, retrieved Oct 1, 2013, [www.montereycountyweekly.com]

What's wrong with this statement?
First of all, notice that his stance is self-centered. "I take this stance," and "I dont think," and "I think." We don't hear what the Bible says about what he's doing, he only justifies himself by his own mind.
Second, you can tell he is one of the "don't judge me" Christians, attempting to justify a "lifestyle" by the music one listens to without being rebuked, and that any music is acceptable to God.
And finally, notice that he says God "redeems all sorts of things." Does God redeem all sorts of THINGS, or all sorts of PEOPLE? There's a huge difference. I challenge this man to find me one tradition of man that God redeems, meaning that it was an evil tree (not of God) to begin with, and God made it good. The Christian God of the Bible changes PEOPLE (not things), and wipes their sin clean; He doesn't redeem the creations of mankind, and He certainly doesn't use evil fruit for His glory.

Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
-Matthew 7:17-19

Did the Bible say that every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit can be cleaned up, and once it has the word "Jesus" written on it over and over, it transforms into a good tree? No, it says it is cast into the fire to be destroyed because it CANNOT produce good fruit. Rock n' roll (sex on the go) was developed out of sexual lust and satanic impluses, guided by demonic entities, so why would a Christian ever believe that music could possibly be used for God?

The Lord God has NEVER used Satanic tools for His glory.

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
-1 Corinthians 2:13-16

The "natural man" referred to here are those of a carnal (fleshly) mind, that don't follow after the righteousness of Christ. Those people who call themselves Christians, yet seek after pleasures will not have any conviction after reading an article like this because the Bible says these things are "SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED," and if one is not spiritually-minded, having "the mind of Christ," then he/she can't discern good and evil, and this article will seem foolishness to that person.

For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
-Hebrews 5:13-14

I don't expect that every Christian should immediately be able to discern good and evil in all areas the moment they are saved. Most born-again believers on Jesus Christ will be deceived early on the path, but as they grow by studying the Word of God (i.e. Christians don't grow without studying the Word), they will practice discerning the things of the world.
So, for example, when I see a report of DC Talk performing Nirvana's song "All Apologies" (by Kurt Cobain, the same man who wrote the song "Rape Me"), I start discerning evil.
"'What else can I say/Jesus is the way.' -- from Christian pop-rap group DC Talk's version of Nirvana's 'All Apologies,' performed at New York's Mercury Lounge"
-CMJ New Music Monthly, No. 33, CMJ Network Inc, May, 1996, p. 34, ISSN: 1074-6978
"In true punk rock fashion, Kurt [Cobain] loved to go out every night with a couple of friends and spray-paint slogans all over the town. Each morning the residents of Aberdeen would wake up to find 'God is Gay' or 'Abort Christ' sprayed on their walls and pickup trucks."
-Ian Halperin & Max Wallace, Who Killed Kurt Cobain?: The Mysterious Death of an Icon, Citadel Press, 1999, p. 25, ISBN: 9780806520742
"[Kurt] Cobain now gave it as his ambition to 'get stoned and worship Satan'. He routinely achieved the first, traveling in to Aberdeen with what Megan Kern called 'a ton of grass' zippered into his quilted jacket. (Cobain still sang in the church choir, where his voice attracted attention.)"
-Christopher Sandford, Kurt Cobain, Hachette UK, 2013, p. 1982, ISBN: 9781409148012
How could a born-again Christian, walking in the spirit of truth, be unable to discern that Cobain was a wicked man with wicked music, and end up using the fruit of that evil tree? DC Talk replaced the lyrics "everyone is gay," with "Jesus is the way," but all that's doing is watering an evil tree. This should be no surprise to fans of DC Talk who also know of Kurt Cobain's music, since Kevin Max Smith, lead singer of DC Talk, styles his appearance to look like worldy Cobain, frosting and styling his hair to making himself look like a man who went to hell.

This should come as no surprise since we saw earlier that Kevin Max would "love to hang with" Satanist Marilyn Manson to discuss music. After DC Talk ended, Kevin Max Smith went on to make more records that barely saw the light of day because Virgin Records dropped DC Talk, and he was picked up by a Christian recording studio. Smith's lack of desire for music reflecting the Lord Jesus Christ has continued past DC Talk:
"It fell on deaf ears within the Christian community because they were like, 'Where's our Jesus songs?' There are no Jesus songs on the record."
-Kevin Max Smith, quoted by Chad Radford, "Life After DC Talk," CL Atlanta, Aug 23, 2010, retrieved Oct 2, 2013, [www.clatl.com]

Max even through in some secular music to try and increase sales in 2009:
"I threw in a Prince song and a George Michael song, and they thought I wasn't being serious about it, so that fell on deaf ears again."
-Kevin Max Smith, quoted by Chad Radford, "Life After DC Talk," CL Atlanta, Aug 23, 2010, retrieved Oct 2, 2013, [www.clatl.com]

George Michaels, who wrote the song "I Want Your Sex," and Prince, who wrote the song "Dance With The Devil," were apparently the kind of influences that Kevin Max thought would be good listening for a Christian audience. I'm sorry to pick on Kevin Max so much, because he is only one of a many thousands of "Christian" artists who have done similar things, but he is an excellent example of the deception of "Christian" rock, and I want Christians to understand how easy it is to be deceived.

Famous singer Michael W. Smith founded a ministry called "Rockettown," in which they promote Satanic, anti-Christian music.
(Christians parents raise concern against Smith's Rockettown over Satanic music.)
Notice that the lady (employee at Rockettown) at the end of the video clip tries to justify herself and their "ministry" as reaching out to children for Christ, but let's read some lyrics from one of the bands that Michael W. Smith and Rockettown endorses via concert and allows its music to be played through its halls:
"Black Valor" - Black Dahlia Murder
Join us! Black valor's on our side
Striking with satanic force we'll crust their fabled Christ
Decimated by a whirlwind of insufferable attacks
Impenetratable black phalanx of our unblessed spear and shield
We march upon the enemy with hate, with hate
On this day of victory christian blood will soak these battlefields

The tidings of a war infernal
Destruction of all angelic life
To bear the mark of the pentagram circle reviled
Armageddon's drawing nearer
On the coattails of the end we'll ride
Of death we hath no fear,
Hails! black valor's on our side!
Boundless is unholiness iniquitous our pride
Each man a god unto himself spirit never to die
(Read "Wolves in Costume: Michael W. Smith" here at creationliberty.com for more details; Michael W. Smith has denied the Lord Jesus Christ on international television.)

Do you honestly believe that the Gospel can be preached
after a session of headbanging to this dark demonic blasphemy?

The Devil's Hand-Sign

"Mano Cornuto: Means 'horned hand' in Italian; the gesture is commonly depicted on charms against the evil eye. It is unclear whether the gesture originated as an image of horns or as a 'poking out the eyes' gesture, but the ancient lunar goddess charms depicting animal horns were used for similar protective purposes and are probably related to the gesture.
The use of the horns as a symbol of satanic belief is recent, and is evolved from it's use by heavy metal musicians and fans."
-Dennis Famieh, Shattering the Web of Satan, AuthorHouse, 2009, p. 111. ISBN: 9781467004398

This hand-sign has been made in countless rock concerts, and has been found in rock albums and images from rock artists all across the world. I have personally seen this sign being flashed in numerous videos of Christian rock concerts.
(Read "Wolves in Costume: Amy Grant" here at creationliberty.com for more details.)

Those who defend this hand-sign as being completely harmless reference it as being the symbol for "I love you" in sign language, but as we just read, this hand sign was around in witchcraft long before sign language was invented. The surprising fact is that Helen Keller, the inventor of this hand sign, was trained in the occult.

To make the connection, we have to go to the man whom Keller said was her greatest inspiration, and it wasn't Jesus Christ:
"Yes, the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg have been my light and a staff in my hand, and by his vision splendid I am attended on my way."
-Helen Keller, quoted by Lois J. Einhorn, Helen Keller, Public Speaker: Sightless But Seen, Deaf But Heard, Greenwood Publishing Group, 1998, ISBN: 9780313286438

Emanuel Swedenborg was involved heavily in mysticism, which is a form of witchcraft and divination that the Bible condemns as an abomination. (Many call him a "Christian" mystic, but there is no such thing as you are either a Christian, or a mystic, but you can't be both.) He sought to completely reform Christianity.
"Swedenborgianism: Emanuel Swedenborg, 1688-1772, Swedish philosopher and Christian mystic, who derived a faith based on the supposed close 'correspondence' between the natural and spiritual worlds. The writings of Swedenborg made a firm impression on a number of nineteenth-century American Transcendentalists; and, like the Transcendentalists, many so-called 'Swedenborgians' devoted themselves both to social and religious reform, particularly, but not exclusively, in the United States."
-Thomas Gunn, The Physiology of New York Boarding-Houses, Rutgers University Press, 2008, p. 188, ISBN: 9780813546216

Visualization techniques are the basics of sorcery and witchcraft, which is exactly what Swedenborgianism was teaching their disciples to do. It's a works-based religion that will lead people to hell, and Helen Keller was a Swedenborgianist.
(See LLC Books, American Swedenborgians; Helen Keller, General Books LLC, 2010, ISBN: 9781155156101)

Emanuel Swedenborg was one of a number of mystics who inspired the founding of the Theosophical Society, founded in 1875 by a woman named Elena Blavatsky.
"For Satan is the magistrate of the Justice of God... Satan is the minister of God, Lord of the seven mansiosn of Hades... Satan who is the god of our planet and the only god."
-Elena P. Blavatskaja, Anthropogenesis, Vol .2, Theosophical Publishing Company, 1888, p. 234

Helen Keller is considered by Theosophists to be a Theosophist herself, since Keller's personal teachings from her own works match exactly that of the new-age occult teaching of their society. Keller is spoken of in all sorts of Theosophical magazines and books, including quotes directly on the Theosophical Society website. In her book, My Religion, Keller's main focus was on Swedenborgianism, which is one of the major mystics who sparked the creation of the Theosophical society.
(See Helen Keller, My Religion, Book Tree, 2007, p. iii, 44, 52, 59, 68, 81, 99, ISBN: 9781585092840; See also The Theosophist, Vol. 22, Theosophical Publishing House, 1901, p. 700; See also The Theosophical Review, Vol. 37, 1906, p. 320-328)

Keller could have chosen any number of millions of combinations of hand signs for "I love you," but she chose a symbol directly used by mystics for centuries, and now, it is commonly used in rock music as the symbol of the goat's horns in reference to Satan. Whether she intentional made it that way by design or not is unknown, but her strong connections to mysticism certainly provide evidence to that possibility. This symbol is used commonly around the world, not for love, but as an occultic sign that many may or may not know they are weaving with their hands. In live rock concerts, after seeing the Satanic connections, it is not hard to believe that one would be demonically possessed on stage to make such signs.
(Today's modern use of the term 'I love you' is based in lust and selfishness, where as the Bible has complete different definitions of love. Read "What is Love?" here at creationliberty.com for more details.)

Whatever you want to believe about this demonic hand-sign, there is one thing we can say for certain: It is not of Christ. Christians ought not to have any reason for "rocking out" and making this hand sign.

At this point, there should be NO doubt that rock music has been the tool of Satan since it was invented, and it continues to be a plague in churches. Churches today are using "Christian rock" as a method of competing against the following songs:
Hell Patrol - Judas Priest Speed demons cry, The Hell Patrol... Night riders, Death dealers... Gonna go for your throat as you choke... Terrorize you, Pulverize you, Gonna cut to the bone as you groan
The Devil Is Me - KISS I ran from temptation I prayed for salvation, I screamed out God save me from my own damnation... I woke up in a sweat and heard the Lord's decree, The devil is me, I fought myself to be set free 'cause the devil is me (i.e. he cannot get salvation because he is already damned)
Hell's Bells - AC/DC You're only young but you're gonna die, I won't take no prisoners won't spare no lives, Nobody's putting up a fight, I got my bell I'm gonna' take you to hell, I'm gonna get ya satan get ya... I'll give you black sensations up and down your spine, If you're into evil you're a friend of mine
The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden The ritual has begun Satan's work is done, 666 the number of the beast, Sacrifice is going on tonight... I'm coming back I will return, And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn
Burn in Hell - Twisted Sister Welcome to the abandoned land, come on in child, take my hand, here there's no work or play, only one bill to pay, there's just five words to say as you go down, down, down, you're gonna burn in hell
The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden The ritual has begun Satan's work is done, 666 the number of the beast, Sacrifice is going on tonight... I'm coming back I will return, And I'll possess your body and I'll make you burn
See You in Hell - Grim Reaper So let's get it started, 'Cause tonight it's going down. See you in hell... You never can tell it might be like Heaven, Devil y'all, Got an old les Paul, His amps are all Cranked up to eleven. Everybody say hell, Everybody say yeah, I smoke, I drink, I lie, I cheat, And damn I do it well. See you in hell.

There are THOUSANDS of songs like this, and more coming in every year around the world; all in the rock genre. Satan has chosen his brand of music to deliver his message, and I published these lyrics in this article to help Christians understand that this is not the most dangerous music being made right now. Though we should expose this music for the Satanic garbage it is, this is not the biggest threat to the church of Jesus Christ. The artists of these Satanic songs are obviously wolves, easy to spot, but Jesus Christ warned us about something far more sinister:

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
-Matthew 7:15

For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
-Acts 20:29-30

It's not hard to spot the wolf when they come out and speak directly of worshiping the Devil, but the most dangerous will be the wolves appearing to be Christians, entering into the congregations of our churches. These are labeled as "Christian" rock songs that topped the charts, and yet their words are void of the Lord Jesus Christ, or anything that specifically points to the Christian God of the Bible and the truth of the Gospel. (i.e. There is no milk or meat of the Word to be fed from these songs, and they're all self-centered... and this is coming from someone who, when I was a new Christian, used to dance around and sing some of these songs all the time.)
Flood - Jars of Clay Rain, rain on my face, It hasn't stopped raining for days, My world is a flood, Slowly I become one with the mud, But if I can't swim after forty days, and my mind is crushed by the thrashing waves, Lift me up so high that I cannot fall, Lift me up
One Girl Army - Five Iron Frenzy
(They also have a song where they sing the Doxology, which is a Catholic ritual; appealing to works-based religions to make money.)
Here lies the old myth, breaking the mold with, truth to take away the trickery. Twenty centuries of progress, suffer slowly as we regress, losing headway to ourselves. She is strong but never silent, sure of where her truth/strength comes from, one day, one girl army will overcome.
Higher - POD higher Ė a place Iíve only imagined, higher Ė farther than Iíve ever gone, higher Ė itíll all make sense when I get there, all the things I know and the things I donít, Iím standing on my own
The Red - Chevelle
(Another song with no references to the Christian God of the Bible nor the Lord Jesus Christ.)
They say freak, when you're singled out, the red, well it filters through, so lay down, the threat is real, when his sight goes red again
Shackles - Mary Mary
(No references to the Christian God of the Bible nor the Lord Jesus Christ.)
Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance, I just wanna praise you, You broke the chains now I can lift my hands, And I'm gonna praise you
Whispers in the Dark - Skillet
(The song has no references to the Christian God of the Bible nor Jesus Christ; vagueness that allows people to interpret it however they like.)
You'll never be alone, When darkness comes I'll light the night with stars, Hear the whispers in the dark, No, You'll never be alone, When darkness comes you know I'm never far, Hear the whispers in the dark, Whispers in the dark... I will be the one that's gonna find you I will be the one that's gonna guide you My love is A burning, consuming fire

(Interview with the "Christian" rock band Skillet)
@0:15 -- "Diehard fans, who call themselves 'panheads'"
It's interesting to note that 'panhead' is referring to cookwear, but 'Pan' is also one of the satanic gods that Aleister Crowley worshiped. Earlier, I quoted the "Hymn to Pan," which was the poem/song Crowley wrote claiming that he was a god himself, and that he rapes and rends forever. Whether there is a hidden connection or not, why would a born-again Christian call oneself a 'panhead' for any reason?

@0:56 -- "I tell people we're like the Osbournes, just without the profanity and drugs"
As we read earlier, Ozzy Osbourne studied satanism at the feet of Aleister Crowley, and the Osbournes are bathed in wickedness in more ways than profanity and drugs. Yet, even though this couple dresses and tattoos themselves to look as worldly as they can, they are still defended by fans as a "Christian" rock band, but their appearance (along with their music) shows an entirely different message when looking at the fruit.

Abstain from all appearance of evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:22

Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
-Matthew 7:20

Michael, a Skillet fan, wrote me in attempt to justify his pleasure in listening to their rock music. He said, "Skillet is not a wolf in sheep's clothing, they are sheep in wolves clothing." Nowhere in the Bible did Christ ever tell us to put on the appearance of the world, but rather, we are instructed to do the opposite:

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
-Romans 12:2

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
-1 John 2:15-16

Such a statement is completely contrary to the doctrine Jesus Christ taught us. We do not hide behind worldly disguises to cover the light, and when a man calling himself a Christian hides himself in the darkness, it's because he loves darkness to cover his evil deeds:

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
-Matthew 5:14-16

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
-John 3:19

@1:22 -- "The band will soon be touring with Nickelback"

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
-2 Corinthians 6:14

Yoking themselves up (and sharing a stage) with the wicked band Nickelback, who writes a song called "Animals," which says "I'll ask polite if the devil needs a ride because the angel on my right ain't hanging out with me tonight... Your mom don't know that you were missing, she'd be p***ed if she could see the parts of you that I've been kissing."

It makes perfect sense why Skillet has purposely left out the title of "Christian" when they publish their work:
"Everyday more and more artists or bands in the Christian industry speak about shedding the title of 'Christian.' In an interview with STLtoday, front man of the band Skillet, John Cooper, went into greater detail about why he and his band prefer to avoid using the word 'Christian.' 'I just tell people I'm in a hard-rock band. I leave Christian out,' he told STLtoday. 'A lot of people don't know what Christian rock is, or they think it's only for Christian people. We're not a band that only sings to Christian people. I meet tons of fans, and I've had fans that said, I'm an atheist and I love your message.'"
-Jeannie Law, "Skillet Band Shed Christian Title; 'I Leave 'Christian' Out... I Don't Want to Alienate' Says Lead Singer (VIDEO)," Breathe Cast, May 9, 2014, retrieved Nov 6, 2015, [breathecast.com/articles/skillet-band-shed-christian-title-i-leave-christian-out-i-don-t-want-to-alienate-says-lead-singer-video-15622]

That's right -- atheists will tell them how much they love them and love what they do because the world loves his own. That's demonstrates to us whether Skillet is of Christ or of the world:

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
-John 15:19

They want to shed the title of "Christian" because they are not born-again to begin with. They teach a doctrine of hiding light instead of letting it shine because the band want the world to love them.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
-Matthew 5:13-16

I give praise to our Lord Jesus Christ that these people are shedding the title of Christian because at least they're being honest about where they stand. However, they still want to claim they are closet "Christians," which is still going to lead many into deception.

Just in the Christian rock sector, Skillet has made around $11,000,000 per year since 2008, so can you just imagine Paul, the apostle, traveling from city to city, and preaching the Gospel only to those who will pay $35 a ticket? That's not even a very good analogy considering that not much of Skillet's music points back to the Gospel of Jesus at all, which is the main reason they're turning so much profit.

Most Christians will be confused as to why I would say these lyrics are more dangerous than men singing about bringing people to hell. If you put out pure poison for rats, they won't eat it, but if you mix some of that poison in with little tasty food pellets, they'll eat the poison willingly, thinking it is good food; likewise, if someone walked up to you in church on a Sunday morning and asked you if you wanted to go worship Satan, you would immediately reject that person, but if someone walked up to you and asked you if you wanted to go worship God, and put on enough bells and whistles just to make you think you were worshiping God, but you were actually worshiping the Devil, without a discerning spirit, you would never know the difference.

In fact, some "Christian" rockers have come forward and admitted that they are not Christian at all, but lying to audiences everywhere to turn a profit off of gullible church-goers. In a news interview, Tim Lambesis, singer for the band As I Lay Dying, said the following:
"The first time I cheated on my wife, my interpretation of morality was now convenient for me... I thought of myself as super-scholarly at the time. 'My academic pursuit has led me to this.' I was sincere to a certain degree, but we all hear what we want to hear to justify our actions. I interpreted the evidence how I wanted and felt it was intellectually dishonest to consider myself a Christian. I felt at best I could consider myself agnostic, and at least I would consider myself an atheist."

Not only does Lambesis admit to being an atheist, fooling church-goers to make a living, but also that most of the people he met in the "Christian" rock scene, were NOT Christians at all:
"There are bands out there right now, playing Christian festivals, cashing the Christian checks, selling CDs in the Christian stores, who are not Christians. Maybe one or two guys are, but most of them arenít... I know of one band who says, 'Well, we donít want to let our fans down, because we love them so much.' We toured with more 'Christian bands' who actually arenít Christians than bands that are. In 12 years of touring with As I Lay Dying, I would say maybe one in 10 Christian bands we toured with were actually Christian bands... We talked about whether to keep taking money from the ďChristian market.Ē We had this bizarrely ďnobleĒ thing, like, 'Well, weíre not passing along any bad ideas. Weíre just singing about real life stuff. Those kids need to hear about real life, because they live in a bubble.'"
-Ryan J. Downy, "Tim Lambesis World Exclusive Interview: The As I Lay Daying Singer Breaks His Year-Long Silence," May 16, 2014, retrieved Aug 4, 2014 [www.altpress.com]

While all these church-going teeny-boppers run around listening to their purchased As I Lay Dying CDs, Lambesis was prosecuted and convicted of attempted murder of his wife.
"As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a murder-for-hire plot to kill his wife. In February, the singer pleaded guilty to soliciting an undercover cop to murder Meggan Lambesis, whom he had married eight years prior and adopted three children with; at the time, he faced up to nine years in prison."

If we stay away from "Christian" rock in the first place,
then we won't be deceived by these men at all.

The foolishness of the average church-goer is staggering when we consider that almost all of them think that if someone is playing music in a church building, he/she must be a saved Christian. This is simply not the case, and as this atheist on Youtube commented:
"I'm an atheist and my brother is a preacher. I play guitar at his church every now and then. Totally still an atheist."
-Bustin Justin, "I'm No Longer An Atheist," JaclynGlenn, Dec 18, 2016, retrieved Mar 16, 2017, [youtube.com/watch?v=aPpEdr-CCPI]

Again, we are warned to beware of those who would dress themselves up as sheep, and to sanctify ourselves from them, and it is for this reason that I find the aformentioned songs like "Shackles," (by Mary Mary) for example, to be MORE dangerous than "Hell's Bells." Like most "Christian" music today, they keep the lyrics vague so they can make more money by drawing in a wider audience. The less specific the musician is about the Gospel, the more they can place their own personal philosophies into the meaning of the song, and dupe a huge audience of "Christian" listeners to make major profits.

And Lambesis is not alone. The "Christian" artist George Perdikis, co-founder of the "Christian" rock band Newsboys, came forward on an atheist website in January 2015 and admitted he's an atheist:
"In 1985, I co-founded Newsboys, one of the most successful Christian rock bands in history. You may have heard the band's music in the film 'Godís Not Dead'. The band's album of the same name hit No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart. And I'm now an atheist. How did that happen? Well, let me go back to the band's founding... Peter, Sean, John, and I started out as a cover band playing parties, pubs, churches, youth groups, parks ó anywhere someone would have us. As we grew in confidence, we began to add some original songs to our repertoire. The band evolved quickly...
The choice to become a 'Christian Rock Band' was heavily influenced by Peterís parents, Bill and Rosalie Furler. As fundamentalist Christians, the only acceptable form of music was the kind that worshipped God. Bill and Rosalie were like second parents to me and, for that reason, I never questioned their advice...
We might have been classified as Christian Rock, but, musically, I felt we were as good as any secular band... I always felt uncomfortable with the strict rules imposed by Christianity. All I wanted to do was create and play rock and rollÖ and yet most of the attention I received was focused on how well I maintained the impossible standards of religion... I left the band in 1990 and went back to Adelaide. There, I got married, taught guitar, played pubs and clubs, built homes, and had two beautiful daughters.
As I carved out a life for myself away from the church, I began my own voyage of inquiry into what I believed. My perceptions started to transform when I became interested in cosmology in 1992. I soon found myself fascinated by the works of Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Lawrence Krauss, Brian Cox, and Richard Dawkins. I learned so much and was blown away by all the amazing scientific discoveries and facts. When my marriage dissolved in 2003, I turned my attention to human psychology. By 2007, I renounced Christianity once and for all and declared myself an atheist."

-George Perdikis, "I Co-Founded One of the Most Popular Christian Rock Bands Ever... and I'm Now An Atheist," patheos.com, Jan 21, 2105, retrieved Jan 22, 2015, [www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2015/01/21/i-co-founded-one-of-the-most-popular-christian-rock-bands-ever-and-im-now-an-atheist/#ixzz3PVG6LwO8]

What Perdikis doesn't seem to grasp yet is that he was never a born-again Christian in the first place; he was only following what other people told him to do. He has always been an atheist at heart, but performed on stage in disguise, decieving millions, to make money off of foolish, leavened church-goers.
(Read "False Converts & Eternal Security" here at creationliberty.com for more details.)

I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies... Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
-Amos 5:21-23

The Lord God (Jesus Christ) told Israel that he would not hear their songs and melodies when they were living in their sin and would not sancitfy themselves, so why do church-goers believe He thinks it's acceptable for the Body of Christ?

Perdikis continues:
"Recently, the Newsboys were featured in the movie 'Godís Not Dead'. The movie demonstrated the pervasive attitude of Christians. The Christian music scene is populated by many people who act as though they have a direct hotline to a God who supplies them with the answers to the Universe. There seems to be more ego and narcissism amongst Christian musicians than their secular counterparts. They demonized everyone while giving a pass to their own particular brand of Christianity, making themselves look like fluffy white angels with perfect, synchronized lives. The truth is ó from someone who knows what went on then and what goes on now ó the Newsboys arenít as holy as they profess. Instead of wearing a mask of 'righteousness,' they should acknowledge that they are struggling as much as everyone else."

As I was writing this, I was having conversation with another Christian brother who shares this information with people on "Christian" rock forums. Some of the rockers he has been having conflict with, throwing out their false accusations at this Christian brother, suddenly got silent when Perdikis made this statement, while others are now struggling with the issue, but the fact is that if born-again Christians would sanctify themselves, and renounce the deceitfulness of the world that is only seeking after riches, then there would be nothing to struggle over in the first place.

Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
-2 Corinthians 4:1-6

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
-1 Peter 5:2

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
-1 Peter 5:2

The lead singer of Everyday Sunday, Trey Pearson, whose band had the highest rated Christian rock song of 2007, came out of the closet and admitted he is, and has always been, a homosexual:
"'I finally decided to come out because I couldn't keep trying to be something that I wasn't... I was scared of what God would think and what all of these people I loved would think about me; so it was never an option for me,' he says in the 614 interview... Pearson says he knew from a young age that he was attracted to men, but pushed down those feelings to 'be straight,' marrying a woman eight years ago -- with whom he has two children -- in an effort to life the lifestyle his community expected. Even then, though, it was clear that he 'was never going to be who my wife needed me to be.' And while he will continue to practice his faith, Pearson said he realized he needed to come clean for himself, his family, and his fans. 'I was not making it an option to be gay so I could be loyal to her and my children,' he told Religion News Service writer Jonathan Merritt. 'But then I realized the only way I was ever going to be my best for them was to be healthy myself.'"
-Gil Kaufman, "Christian Rock Star Trey Pearson Comes Out to Fans in Emotional Letter," Billboard, June 2, 2016, retrieved June 3, 2016, [billboard.com/articles/news/7393337/christian-rock-star-trey-pearson-comes-out-to-fans-in-emotional-letter]

I really appreciate Pearson coming out. I don't support his wicked, unbiblical lifestyle of sodomy, nor his attempt to justify it, but I appreciate him coming out with the truth. I only wish more of these "Christian" rockers would come forward with what they really believe so we can more easily expose what's really going on.

Also notice it was about how he looked to others. His resistance of the temptations of sin had NOTHING to do with the Lord Jesus Christ and loyalty to Him, but it had everything to do with what other people thought about him.

Don't think that Pearson is some unique example. More and more gays and lesbians in the "Christian" music arena are coming forward and admitting they're leading the worship for you and your family in your homes, churches, and radio stations:
"The decision may well have an impact on his career, but Pearson joins a slowly growing list of popular Christian musicians who've come out over the past decade, including Ray Boltz, Grammy-nominated singers Anthony Williams and Jennifer Knapp and worship music artist Vicky Beeching, who announced she was a lesbian in 2014. According to the News Service their careers have taken a hit among conservative Christian fans and radio programmers who typically see homosexuality as a sin, resulting in their music being dropped from playlists on radio and in churches."
-Gil Kaufman, "Christian Rock Star Trey Pearson Comes Out to Fans in Emotional Letter," Billboard, June 2, 2016, retrieved June 3, 2016, [billboard.com/articles/news/7393337/christian-rock-star-trey-pearson-comes-out-to-fans-in-emotional-letter]

However, when these "Christian" musicisians keep all this a secret, the church-goers keep listening to their music, calling it "praise and worship of God," when in reality, they are being led by false converts. These "Christian" musicians are hiding the Gospel for sake of filthy lucre (money) and for the sake of hiding their sin.

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
-John 3:19

They are also yoking together false pagan religions around the world. When a Hindu worships one of their false pagan gods, Satan himself is behind that deception, and they worship one of his devil's unknowingly. Hindus listening to these song vaguely talking about "god" will interpret that song in favor of Hinduism, just as Bhuddists with Bhuddism, and Satanists with Satanism. They are vague on purpose to turn a profit; allowing the listener to personally interpret the song however he/she desires, making his/her personal belief the ultimate authority over the truth.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
-Proverbs 14:12

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. -James 1:12-17

Though we may want to believe in our hearts that what we enjoy is good and Biblical and approved by Jesus Christ, the Bible tells us not to be deceived by temptations of the flesh. The music is addictive, and I am one of many testimonies that can verify the truth of that first-hand.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be... Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
-2 Timothy 3:1-5

Songs like "Shackles" are far more dangerous because they are wolves in sheeps clothing, appearing to be holy and righteous, but leaving off the specific truth that points to the Christian God of the Bible and the Salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ (along with completely self-centered lyrics) so they can make a lot of extra money. We ought to turn away from such deception because we are lured in with the desire for feel-good music, but then taught a new-age philosophy through that music that turns us away from the truth of the Gospel.

In a desperate attempt to justify new-age rock, some haters of this article have lied to others saying that I'm ignorant about lyrics, and music in general. I've played piano since I was five years old, and today, I play a number of woodwind and string instruments. I was in orchestra and marching band throughout middle and high school, and I was in two local rock bands, one Christian, and one secular. I listened to a lot of rock music, and Christian rock music growing up, but after studying the Bible, I distanced myself from those things, and now I play classical guitar and write my own songs. But despite this, I still get attacked and have people lie about me. Here's the bottom line: You don't have to be musically skilled AT ALL in order to see the Biblical problems in the "Christian" rock genre, and even if you don't have a long history in music, you still have the authority of God's Word to rebuke wickedness in any area.

And just because I'm experienced in the rock music area, doesn't mean I should be your deciding factor in judging Biblical music. Investigate the truth. Continually study the Word of God, and let the Holy Spirit be your guide in showing you what is righteous based on Biblical standards. Look to the Lord God and be honest about which one of these would the chosen Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ approve for use in the church?
(Notice the "Christian" metal on the left video; if you look closely, you'll see some members in the audience making the devil hand sign just like they do with Satanic rock bands)

Let all things be done decently and in order.
-1 Corithians 14:40

There is no decency and order in most of these concerts. They are just acting like the world, unequally yoking themselves together with unbelievers.

Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
-2 Corinthians 6:14-18

There is no reason for born-again Christians to have associations with unrighteousness, darkness, infidels, idols, nor Satan himself, so why would we seek to copy what Satan has birthed to give God glory? That is only done by people who do not believe what Christ has told us in His doctrine: We can't get good fruit out of an evil tree. We should cease to listen to music that is born out of the bowels of the Devil, and through repitition, teaches us error apart from the truth of the Word of God.

Most rock-obsessed people in the modern-day churches will seek to use a verse like the following to excuse away their lust after this kind of music:

Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:
-Psalm 66:1

But they don't read the verses following it, describing what type of noise specifically:

Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious. Say unto God, How terrible art thou in thy works! through the greatness of thy power shall thine enemies submit themselves unto thee. All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name.
-Psalm 66:2-4

With the above standards set in the book of Psalm,
which one of these two songs is Biblically edifying?

Rob Rock - "Judgement Day" Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty
Violence, wrath and chaos, Blood fills the street
Generals lead their masses,
Children at their feet
Come Armageddon, The woman rides the beast
Wisdom from the heavens,
Anger, plagues, disease
Lead the nations astray,
Kill the prophets and saints
Deluded and fallen, the mark of the beast
Judgment Day
When the stars fall from the sky
Good and evil will collide
There's a rider on the storm
Bringing justice and the sword
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man
thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy;
there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name,

Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.
-Proverbs 19:27

We need to be careful what we are listening to because as I was writing this article, song lyrics and melodies popped back into my head from years of listening to them. I hated researching this article because for days, these wicked songs were stuck in my mind, lyrics and all. When listening to "Christian" rock, you run the risk of programming unbiblical teaching and self-centered messages into your brain, so when you speak, you will repeat from those corruptions in your heart.

But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
-Matthew 15:18

O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
-Matthew 12:34

Just because we like something,
doesn't automatically mean it's good for us.

Most of these new-age "Christian" rock bands leave out any references to the Gospel of Jesus Christ because, in the end, they deny Him before mankind. The cost is too high to include the name that is above every name.

But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
-Matthew 10:33

As a final thought, I recently met a man who claims to be a Christian (preacher with a creation ministry) who started publically railing accusation against me falsely (in front of other eye-witnesses) based on what he read in this article. He had recently supported our ministry until he read this, and then started calling me a long list of names, among which (ignorant, shady, tripe, liar, blind, thick-headed, etc) he mostly referred to me as a "Pharisee" and a "legalist." I couldn't figure out why someone like that would react so viciously all of the sudden, until I read his testimony on his website where stated he was in a heavy metal rock band that had produced over 100 songs before he was saved, and though he stated that God was leading him out of the rock music, a friend had showed him Christian rock, and he was "overjoyed," falling right back into the place from whence he came.
(See Tony Breeden, "Thank God for Christian Rock," Defending Genesis, Nov 7, 2013, retrieved Nov 14, 2013, [siriusknotts.wordpress.com/2013/11/07/christian-rock])

While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
-2 Peter 2:19

But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
-Galatians 2:17-18

Once I learned his bias in this situation, then I understood the truth; his heart is serving his lust (desire for rock music) more than the Word of God, turning back to the pit from whence the Lord dug him out. We need to be careful we do not make the same mistake this man has made, and I pray our Lord Jesus Christ would open all our eyes that we can better serve Him and glorify His Name in our confessions and actions. This man, along side many others, continue to believe a lie that these songs are "sharing the Gospel," but when the Gospel of Jesus Christ is removed and hid from the lyrics (as we demonstrated earlier), there is no Gospel to be shared, and when we preach ourselves (a self-centered message), the Bible tells us the unbelievers will NEVER see the truth.

Over the years, I've received many emails on this subject. I'd like to post a few of the questions and comments here, so others can gain some understanding of the problems with those attempting to justify "Christian" rock. (I'll add more to this in the future.)

July 2015, a woman writes me and asks:
"How should it sound like when we praise God with musical instruments?"

First I gave her the following Scriptures:

And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
-2 Timothy 2:25

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
-John 15:19

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
-Titus 2:11-12

Let all things be done decently and in order.
-1Corinthians 14:40

But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
-1 Peter 3:4

After that, I sent her a link to a video of Skillet in a live performance, and requested that she watch a few minutes of it. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXt0jcFzIZM) The video was originally posted someone who filmed a live performance of Skillet, but it was taken down on a copyright claim (because $11,000,000 a year is just not enough for them I guess). It consisted of moving platforms, lights, really loud music, yelling into the microphones with lots of drums, head banging, and a screaming audience.

Then I asked a few questions, requesting that she use her own discrenment:
  • Do they appear meek and humble?
  • Do they look and sound like the world?
  • Do you look and listen to them and think, "Wow they're so righteous in God?"
  • Are their actions and words showing the Word of God hidden in their hearts with a meek and quiet spirit?
  • Does it look like they're instructing others in patience and gentleness?
  • Does the world love them or hate them?
And I would request other Christians reading this to please read the Scripture, view the video, and answer these questions, using your own discernment, if you have any.

But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
-Hebrews 5:14

Here was her response to these questions:
"Its not my cup of tea, but i do also not want to judge them or criticize them.... for i dont know their intentions and their heart and where they are at with the relationship with Jesus Christ."

To those of you out there who refuse to use spiritual discernment and proper Biblical judgment on matters (i.e. "I do not want to judge them"), I say unto you: There is no answer that will satisfy you until you receive a document directly from God stating every detail of every action you take in this world. The "don't judge me" or "I don't want to judge" crowd use those phrases as quick cop-out responses to inquiry because they have little or no understanding of the Word of God.
(Read "Unbiblical Cop-Outs: Don't Judge Me!" here at creationliberty.com for more details.)

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
-1Co 2:15

Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
-John 7:24

If you refuse to look at these men and compare them to Scripture (righteous judgment), then you've got bigger problems than music details, because this is basic doctrine Christ instructed us to do. This is one of the first things a brand new Christian ought to learn to do.

What you're really wanting is for someone to say, for example, should we or should we not play a saxophone, how much air should we use, what is the proper volume, how quickly should it be played -- you're asking to be put under the jot and tittle of the law. I could ask the same with your computer: How often should we use it, what should be viewed and listened to, what settings should we set it at, what programs are acceptable -- that's asking to be put under bondage, and it doesn't invoke discernment of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.

Because of that, you will not understand any answer that's given, and continue to minster questions. I literally just gave you a list of verses that describe how Christians ought to behave in all manner of our lives, and you still cannot (or refuse to) see good or evil when comparing to these men. Without discernment, you will never be able to judge right or wrong, and will continue to question the law of everything, whether it be what kind of car you should drive, whether God wants you to fix your lawn mower or not (I've actually heard that one before), or if you should get reading glasses or not. We may not be able to see directly into the hearts of these men, but their hearts come spewing out of their mouths, and with the Word of God at hand, we can discern their hearts by their lips:

And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
-Mark 7:20-23

This is Christian doctrine 101. If you can't tell me whether those people on that stage are good or evil by reading the Word of God and making a comparison, then I can't tell you whether or not your music is good or evil, which is precisely the answer Christ gave the Pharisees:

And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
-Matthew 21:24-27
