What's your favorite Hymn?
« on: September 18, 2018, 11:03:35 PM »
I wanted to start a post here just to see what people's favorite hymn was.  With all the ungodly music out there i.e CCM, it's nice to know that there are people who lived that actually studied their bible and wrote very scriptural songs.  My personal favorite is "How Great Thou Art" Every time I hear this song, it actually stirs my soul and am reminded just how awesome, great, and wonderful God really is!  I just love this song. I can remember when I was a child my grandfather (who lived across the street) would sing this song to the top of his lungs. You could hear him in the neighborhood. This is a very special childhood memory of mine that I love think about.

Verse #1
O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Chorus:
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Verse #2
When through the woods, and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze

Chorus:
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Verse #3
And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin

Chorus:
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Verse #4
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Chorus:
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

Steve, thank you for this post.  The hymn you shared with us is truly a wonderful hymn.  Reading the words actually brings tears to my eyes.  (The words describe what I am constantly doing...looking at nature, at everything God has made...the stars, the trees and birds, the flowers...just yesterday, I sat with Joshua, under our apricot trees...and a sweet humming bird came to the tree and rested on a branch...and I was thinking about how Jesus made everything so beautiful...then came a cool gentle breeze...and especially in these trying times, it is good to remember How Great God is...and what He did for us.)

Amazing Grace is a hymn that I often find myself singing.  God saved me, and I am so thankful for Him.
He is my Shield and my Hope and I cling to Him.

Verse 1
Amazing grace how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind, but now I see

Verse 2
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Verse 3
The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures

Verse 4
When we've been there ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we first begun

Last night, it was very late when I posted my favorite hymn.
This morning, my first thoughts were to check the words to the hymn "Amazing Grace" and found verse 2 to be questionable.
Where it says, "The hour I first believed."

It doesn't mention Repentance, with grief and godly sorrow.

So, I'm off to find a new favorite.  But I think Steve has chosen the best hymn...it really is beautiful.
And I think it's beautiful that Steve's grandfather sang this song loud, for all to hear.  He was being a light to many :-)

The word 'believe' is used many times in the gospels and epistles but what those who aren't really of Christ refuse to accept is that it goes way deeper than just 'believing' that Christ died on the cross for our wrong and then continuing on one's merry little way and doing just as they please.

Matthew 13 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)
44 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Just about 100% of those who call themselves "Christians" definitely do not want to have any scripture pointed out to them.  They do not want any discussion about scripture.  They do not want to have to think. They don't want to read the Bible and they don't read the Bible (unless it is to cherry pick out a few verses that suits their immediate needs).  They have purchased a quick and easy ticket to Heaven based on a wrong understanding of what it means to believe and their 'pastors' will back them up on it 100% because they don't want to hear otherwise either because they are "in the same boat".

If one truly believes something then it is usually backed up with actions.  Because the Bible uses the term to 'believe' then I think we should too but we use it just to go that little bit further in explaining to people what it really means to believe.
And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the Lord, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.  Micah 5:7 Authorized (King James) Version (AKJV)

Hi there, I have quite a few favorites:-)
I am not a very good singer, but I love to sing! I mostly do it with my children, and they do not notice when I am out of tune, they just share my joy:-)

To God be the glory, great things He hath done,
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life our redemption to win,
And opened the life-gate that all may go in.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  Let the earth hear His voice;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
  Let the people rejoice;
Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.
2
Oh, perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
3
Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see.

AND this one draws me to tears often...

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live
There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost it's grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
'Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand

"Oh! How I love Jesus"

Unfortunately I know very few of the old hymns. But I am blessed to know some men who have a heart for singing  old hymns from time to time to the lost out on the street.

You can fast forward this video to the 38-minute mark and hear my friend Marvin sing this old hymn. Maybe it is just me but this one sounds pretty good through a bullhorn.   :D

Nehemiah 8:8 KJV — So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

Kenneth, thank you for posting this song :-)
(and the links that you post on this forum)

Hearing and watching all of you sing, and hearing the preaching about God on the streets,
is a beautiful way to start this day.

God Bless all of the godly men out there, Amen.

My favorite?  Wow, I love so many!

I would have to choose "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" or "Be Thou My Vision."

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Here there by Thy great help I've come
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

Oh, that day when freed from sinning
I shall see Thy lovely face
Clothed then in the blood washed linen
How I'll sing Thy wondrous grace
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry
Take my ransomed soul away
Send Thine angels now to carry
Me to
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Matthew 9:13
