BITTER Apricot Seeds
« on: August 19, 2018, 08:38:20 PM »
Any suggestions?
These things taste AWFUL!  :P
We've been eating them straight, 3 at time, but if y'all have any tips on making these B17 cancer fighting little gems a bit more palatable we'd be very appreciative.  ::)

Have you tried grinding them up into smoothies along with other fruits and berries?

Not yet. We don't make smoothies as often as we should. But I'm trying to figure a way that I can conveniently have them twice a day without too much fuss.  (Or maybe I'm just whining.  ???
We'll eat them like they are if we have to.

I'm also curious as to how many folks are eating these on a regular basis.

Just drink some fruit juice behind them, that helps. Generally, if they taste really horrible, that means you need the nutrients more desperately. Once you get used to them, you'll start to notice they have a mild vanilla flavor to them, but I still usually drink fruit juice behind them to help them go down smooth. (And the vitamins from organic fruit juices help your body to absorb other vitamins and minerals; which in turn helps the entire process for B17.)

I eat apple seeds every day and they have a good strong benzaldehyde taste to them.  Only in the summer do I buy fresh apricots.

Actually, I have noticed a some very nice flavors behind all that bitterness.

Fruit juice sounds like a good idea. :)

Thanks guys.

I can confirm they are indeed bitter,
but not bad -if you have eaten apple seeds every now and again.

Smoothie blending - seems to be the most straightforward way to hide some of the bitterness as mentioned above.

On the apple seeds being bitter, ive found that if i eat them about halfwayish through eating the apple i don't really notcie that they're there, now this is nonviable with apricot seeds, but does anyone know if maybe a type of butter or cooking oil could be made from them?

Hi Tristan

Have you ever heard of amaretti as in amaretti biscuits

Amaretti biscuits: Temptation in a tin
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/8904800/Amaretti-biscuits-Temptation-in-a-tin.html

on this website as in just about all others they falsely claim that:

"... Apricot kernels are poisonous, but not if you bake them at a certain temperature ..."

Quite false as just about all of us in the forum would be dead if the kernels were poisonous.

But this does answer your question though, that 'No' you can't make cooking oil from them and still maintain their therapeutic properties.  Making a type of butter from them might be possible though so long as it is only done by a cold process.

Hello Kevin

Thanks for the info, i haven't heard of amaretti biscuits before,

i'll have a look and see if i can find out the specifics of such a cold process, it won't be of any use to me now but maybe in a few years i might have the space and time to experiment there, God willing.

Actually, Kevin, those websites are being PARTIALLY truthful when they say that apricot kernels are poisonous. They just neglect to mention the fact that they're only poisonous to cancer cells... LOL

I apologize for bringing up an old thread, but I have read Christopher's article about cancer and I have started eating the apricot kernels. They do not taste all too bitter, but I noticed that I become quite sleepy after eating them and I end up taking naps afterwards. Does this happen to you all as well?

First of all, you need to make sure that you're eating BITTER apricot kernels. They are a different variety from the not-so-bitter ones but I don't know all that much about it. Second, if you get sleepy after eating them, then just use them before bedtime. It would probably help your body get all the sleep it actually needs in a night anyway.

Jeanne, are the bitter, apricot kernels more potent than the non-bitter ones? Also, where would I get the bitter batches of kernels? Currently, I am getting the kernels from the apricot fruits. Additionally, if the bitter kernels are more potent than the non-bitter ones, I probably shouldn't drive after eating an apricot kernel. I can imagine a police officer pulling me over and a conversation going like this:

Police Officer: Good evening, sir. What drinks have you had this evening?
Me: I had a cup of apricot kernels, officer  :D

John, as I am in Australia, I have no clue as to where you would get bitter apricot seeds. You would be better off asking people over there who actually get and use them. Also, I don't see that any police officer would care what you had to eat; they're more concerned with what you drink or what drugs you've used, which is NOT something you should have to be worried about. ;)

Here are some that I just ordered.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083W6VNVG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_X.UkFb5N111J9

They have been tasting much less bitter over time.
I usually eat  4 seeds once or twice a day.

If anyone is interested, I found a seller that sells a 4 lb pack of bitter, apricot seeds for just $24.95.
